BMO Presents: The Gayla Gala! – Wednesday, May 3, 7:30pm

“THE GAYLA GALA!”

Wednesday, May 3 – 7:30pm
Alumnae Theatre
70 Berkeley Street
Go HERE for Tickets: Group of 10 $3000
Individual: $300
(Tax receipts available in accordance with CRA rules and regulations)

Well we’re back!  And back with a vengeance committed to raising funds for small queer charities across Canada (and maybe someday internationally).

The festival kicks off with it’s big ticket gala at the Alumnae Theatre on Wednesday May 3 at 7:45 pm. This year’s “Gayla Gala” is a 90 minute fast-paced variety show featuring festival talent and loads of Canada’s favourite personalities. We’re celebrating performance of all kind so, as is the case with all of our galas, you never know what you might get (but if you’re in the front row you might get wet).

Scheduled to appear: Lea DeLaria (Orange is the New Black), Stephen Wallem (Nurse Jackie), Colin Mochrie (Whose Line), Deb McGrath (Little Mosque), Gavin Crawford (Because News), Shohsana Sperling (The Monkey Bunch), Teresa Pavlinek (The Jane Show), Martha Chaves (JFL),  Areta Marshall (Slam Poet), Belle Jumelles (Burlesque), David Benjamin Tomlinson (Starf*cker), Chantel Marostica (JFL), Lucas Silveira (the Cliks), Ryan Graham Hinds (#KanderandEbb) and introducing Amir Brandon. Festival founder Maggie Cassella (standup, TV host, neat freak) will host this all-star and future-star show.

Tickets are $300 a person or $3000 for a group of ten and can be purchased online at http://thegaylagala.bpt.me  or by writing maggie@werefunnythatway.org (Tax receipts available in accordance with CRA rules and regulations).

Oh and there’s fun food too.  It may not be fancy but it’s fun and yummy and there will be CUPCAKES!  Rubber chickens reserved for the stage.

We know this is a big ticket but thanks to our sponsors EVERY penny of it goes directly to the Foundation which means it goes directly to helping a small queer charity somewhere in Canada stay on it’s feet.  Give yourselves a pat on the back k?

Oh and don’t forget to pat our gold sponsor

and our Media Sponsors

Best known for his role as Thor on Nurse Jackie, SAG Award nominated actor Stephen Wallem is our version of a triple threat: Actor, Singer, and Funny Guy!

“A Burly Night Music” is a musical and anecdotal retrospective of a very high voice trapped in a very large body.

Featuring songs from Stephen’s big and/or “simple” guy roles including Shrek in Shrek the Musical, Hazel in Pipe Dream, and Horton the Elephant in Seussical, as well as songs from Hairspray, Elf, Anna Nicole the Opera, The Addams Family and original music celebrating the big-boned beauty of Broadway and Hollywood.

Stephen has too many stage credits to list here but there’s always room for awards and super honour-y stuff so…

His performance in Bedroom Secrets earned him the 2014 Fringe NYC Overall Excellence in Acting Award. He also teamed with Edie Falco for a sold-out run of the original cabaret The Other Steve and Edie at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. Chicago Cabaret Professionals named Stephen their National Honoree for 2014.

Stephen served as host of the Marriage Equality USA National Gala in 2013 and the Empire State Pride Agenda Gala in 2014. He was also a keynote speaker at the Human Rights Campaign gala in Philadelphia.

This is Stephen’s Toronto solo show debut so get your tix early as the space is small and the talent is huuuuuge!

Here’s a bit from a show he did with Edie Falco where he’s defying – well you’ll see

“Don’t Die Of Constipation” – A Comedy Show about Letting Go

Fears are the constipation of the soul. As humans, we hold on to so many of them. Men fear commitment. Women fear getting their period on vacation. Old people fear Twitter. We all fear something. But what if we took a moment to look at our fears and decided to not be afraid anymore?

The topic of the night is letting go – otherwise known as relieving the proverbial constipation of our lives. Join Aastha as she takes you on a comedic journey through the realm of letting go and ultimately setting sail towards unbridled potential. Aastha won’t be able to get your boyfriend to commit, or coordinate your menstrual cycle, but she WILL help your mom learn how to tweet.

Get ready for a comedy show like no other. Don’t miss it!

Stand-up tour de force Martha Chaves makes her festival debut!

Check out the brilliant Martha E. Chaves! Originally from Nicaragua, Martha has over 20 years become one of Canada’s most successful comedians, performing all over the world in several languages to sold-out audiences. This all in addition to numerous festivals, and acting in movies with Chris Rock and Denzel Washington. Martha is not only an incredibly fun presence on stage, transitioning seamlessly between every subject under the sun, but her ability to make politics both funny and accessible to everyone is something you need to see to believe.
